Museum Restitution Community Consultation & Public Awareness

  • The Africa Centre 66 Great Suffolk Street London, England, SE1 0BL United Kingdom (map)

Decolonising the Archive (DTA) has designed a Museum Restitution Course, from the success of our Correcting Our Collecting course to address the inhumane practice of exhibiting ill - gotten human remains or erroneously catalogueing ancestral remains as 'Mummies' in museum and heritage spaces.

In a mission to shed light on the matter, we invite the general community, museum practitioners, students and humanitarians to join us in this knowledge sharing and reassessment of museum practices alongside critiquing the harm done in the wider sociological context to African heritage communities whose ancestors are on display.

We are honoured to have as a special guest Professor Kyle Mays ( California) who is an Afro-Indigenous (Saginaw Chippewa native American) writer and scholar of US history, urban studies, race relations, contemporary popular culture and author of his famous books An Afro-indigenous History of the United States, City of Dispossession and Four Hundred Souls. Drawing from the experience of Native Americans and their approach to both Restitution and Reparations.

Title of Professor Mays’ lecture is:

Black Reparations & Tribal Sovereignty a Decolonial Crtique

The community will also be able to speak and share with the Ancestral Remains Ethical Rights Enablers graduates from the Museum Restitution Course.

WE HAVE TEAMED UP WITH THE AFRICA CENTRE TO BRING YOU AN ONGOING SERIES. OF PUBLIC ENGAGEMENTS AROUND RESTITUTION.
